Sunday Funday Preview

By Brad Wilson | AP News | Dec. 22, 2025

Two pivotal matchups headline Sunday’s slate, with conference implications, ranking movement and contrasting styles all in play as the season begins to take shape.

Memphis at Temple

PHILADELPHIA — Memphis arrives with momentum and a résumé that looks stronger by the week.

The Tigers opened the season with a 17-point win over Toledo, a result that gained new significance after the Rockets upset then-No. 1 Hawaii on Saturday. That transitive boost has Memphis trending upward and positioned as one of the conference’s most dangerous teams.

Temple, meanwhile, faces a second straight challenge against an elite opponent. The Owls opened the season against No. 3 San Diego State and now turn around to host a Memphis team riding high.

Temple’s hope lies in experience. After seeing top-end speed and physicality against the Aztecs, the Owls won’t be overwhelmed by Memphis’ athleticism. An early turnover or defensive stand could change the tone and test how the Tigers respond when pushed.

Memphis is favored by double digits and enters with confidence, while Temple is still searching for traction after a demanding opening schedule.

San Diego State at North Texas

DENTON, Texas — Sunday’s marquee game features a Top-5 showdown and a stark contrast in styles.

San Diego State, ranked third, brings a disciplined, defense-first approach after handling Temple in its opener. The Aztecs are comfortable slowing games down, controlling the ball and forcing opponents to play on their terms.

North Texas, ranked fifth, prefers the opposite. The Mean Green thrive on tempo and offensive rhythm, especially at home, where they’ll look to turn the game into a track meet.

The key battle is pace. If San Diego State establishes the run and shortens the game, it could neutralize North Texas’ biggest advantage. If the Mean Green dictate tempo and create a shootout, the pressure shifts squarely onto the Aztecs’ offense.

With Boise State and UConn looming near the top of the rankings, the winner of this game has a strong case to move into the national Top 3.

What to Watch

  • Statement opportunities: Memphis and North Texas both have chances to redefine their seasons.

  • Ranking implications: Sunday’s results will reshape the top of the conference.

  • Styles clash: Physical defense versus tempo offense headlines the late window.
