Toledo Blanks UNLV 37-0 Behind Dominant Defensive Performance In Quarterfinals

TOLEDO, Ohio — Toledo spent all season building its identity around defense. On Sunday afternoon, the Rockets turned that identity into a postseason statement.

The Doug Powell Defense of the Year lived up to its billing in emphatic fashion, shutting out UNLV 37-0 in a Stateline Elite quarterfinal and holding one of the league’s most explosive offenses to just 134 total yards.

Toledo advances to host No. 8 UTSA in the semifinals, while UNLV’s season ends at 6-4.

From the outset, the Rockets controlled the line of scrimmage and the tempo. UNLV quarterback Anthony Colandrea, one of the conference’s most dynamic dual-threat players, was contained throughout. He completed 12 of 24 passes for 117 yards and was intercepted three times. On the ground, he managed just 1 yard on 15 carries as Toledo limited the Rebels to 17 rushing yards on 19 attempts.

Star running back Jai’Den Thomas, a centerpiece of UNLV’s offense all season, was held to 16 rushing yards on four carries and added two receptions for 33 yards.

Toledo built a 10-0 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 27-0 by halftime. The Rebels crossed midfield only a handful of times and never mounted a serious scoring threat.

“We challenged our defense all week,” Toledo coach Tyler Holjes said. “If you’re the Doug Powell Defense of the Year, prove it in the playoffs. I thought they executed perfectly. Gap sound. Tight coverage. Relentless effort.”

While the defense dictated the game, quarterback Tucker Gleason efficiently guided a balanced offense. Gleason completed 21 of 31 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. He added four carries for no gain.

Gleason spread the ball to multiple targets. Eric Holley III led Toledo with six receptions for 72 yards. Junior Vandeross III caught five passes for 52 yards and a touchdown. Trayvon Rudolph added four catches for 34 yards and a score, and tight end Jacob Peterson had three receptions for 47 yards, including a red-zone touchdown.

On the ground, Chip Trayanum rushed eight times for 45 yards and added a 27-yard reception. Kenji Christian carried seven times for 20 yards and a touchdown and caught two passes for 19 yards.

“To win playoff games, you don’t have to be flashy,” Holjes said. “You have to be efficient. Tucker was efficient.”

Toledo finished with 316 total yards — 251 through the air and 65 on 19 carries — and did not allow UNLV to generate sustained momentum at any point. The Rockets led 30-0 after three quarters and added a fourth-quarter touchdown to seal the shutout.

For UNLV, it was a stark contrast from the previous week’s high-scoring playoff win. The Rebels were outgained 316-134 and committed three turnovers.

“We got beat in every phase,” UNLV coach Matt Glovas said. “Credit to Toledo. They punched us in the mouth and we didn’t respond. That’s on me.”

The Rebels failed to score for the first time this season, managing just 14 completions and averaging barely 7 yards per completion. Troy Omeire had three receptions for 22 yards, Daejon Reynolds added three for 32, and JoJo Earle caught two passes for 17 yards.

Toledo now turns its focus to UTSA, which stunned top-seeded Boise State in a quarterfinal upset.

“UTSA just knocked off the No. 1 seed,” Holjes said. “That tells you everything. We’ll enjoy this one tonight, then it’s back to work.”

For the Rockets, the league’s top defense delivered its most emphatic performance yet — and kept their championship hopes intact.
